What are the laws/restrictions for using artists music during a paid performance? And if there is a difference if the music has been mixed down or is being mixed real time? I know drag queens use other artists music exclusively for paid performance, where do we fit in?

Thu, March 18, 2004 - 10:21 PMThis is prety much how it works most clubs/djs pay a annual fee to the musicans union to play copyrited stuff in the club.If you doing your act in a club even if it is for money you are covered
if the club isnt paying dues you can conetct the union it is like 25 bucks for a month to play any music for a performace
you just can not sell the music.as far as mixing any four beats that run toghter from one song is proctected by the copyrite

I have several people whom I have a contract with, I pay them a one time fee for unlimited use, or some even allow me to use it for free. If I have a DJ remix stuff for me, I pay him a one time fee as well, and have it on contract.
Wanted to clarify that sale of music also extends to video footage. So you can't perform to a copyrighted song on a video and sell the video. It still falls under infringement.
