I have been using a paint bucket that I attached a poi chain to the handle to spin my poi and staff out in. I have had excelent results and now concider it to be a fundamental fire safety tool when I am performing.

from my response at art of poi:

Nick wolseys method sounds simalar but you put a collander or some such raised strainer at the bottom of the can or metal bucket your using. Same basic principle though.

    his method:

    his video:

This would weem pretty important to do if your using kerosene, lamp oil or such as I'm guessing these don't evaporate as well or at all and would leech into the ground. White gass(though not my prefered spinning fuel) would seem to be better in this regard since it evaportes.....more. Though that is just an guess.

That said I haven't been able to get as thurough a spin off as doing it like the old spinn at the ground method...

spin out buckets rarely ever get it all out especially if you have big wicks! but I guess it's no big deal to take a couple of good ol fashioned swings after the bucket but prior to lighting

other than that my only resort is to do lots n lots of fire circles, lines, anything that transfers lit gas to the ground while I gleefully jump around :)

Just don't plan on laying down burning fuel on the playa surface! Last year I know for certain that an art car was cited for doing that in large quantities, and it wouldn't surprise me if this year more attention were given to what we fire dancers are doing.

If you haven't used a spin-off bucket before, Burning Man is a great time to start.

        - Reduce the amount of toxic fuel getting absorbed by the environment.
        - Save money on fuel because you can pour what's collected in the spin-off bucket back into your dipping container.
        - Reduce the amount of fuel you have to transport to the playa.

You can jump around even more gleefully knowing you're doing a good deed and saving money at the same time!

ahhh yes dirtying the big sand box with fuel isn't a good idea!

luckily I never hit up BM cause the heat tends to cook my brain n make me cranky sooooo since you all are gonna be outta town and I'll be home alone I think setting lots of fires n spilling fuel is the appropriate course of action on my part :)

don't worry I'll hold down the fort!

Kerosene wil evaporate in a few days (at most) on the playa. Diesel may take a bit longer. Not much of an enviornmenal hazard but could be an asthetic one. A spin bucket would allow you reuse said fuel.

the nice thing about the bucket is you conserve fuel.... the bad part is if you hit your shin with it OUCH!

I think someone should build a big salad-tossing machine for spinning fuel off poi... a mechanical centrifuge that catches the fuel and funnels it down and back into your fuel can.

Hmmmmmm well then why not just get one of those salad spinners at walmart or some thing and use it... you would have to detach your heads and plop them in it but if you use quick links not a big deal.
it would definatly avoid the shin damage issue (though maybe I'm just a klutz)

Even if it seems like the fuel has evaporated off the ground, all kinds of toxic shit (technical term) continues to stick around. Hey, that rhymes! Not to mention when there are THOUSANDS of people spinning fuel on the ground in a week. I spin also, that's just how I see it. USE THE SPIN_OFF BUCKET LUKE!!

          stop, drop, and roll

anyone know how to keep the fuel from spilling OUT of the bucket once you've spun it off? i successfully achieved spin off-age. but then i spun once more and the fuel went everywhere, not the effect i was hoping for.

            Not really,

Kerosene is made by fractional distillation of petroleum. It doesn't contain any disolved solids and it's practically non toxic.

If spilled on the playa it will evaporate and or soak into the playa, probably a bit of both. The playa is part of a closed water shed so the latter is much less of a problem than you might think. (ie, the ground water under the playa is already non-potable and a few parts per billion of kerosene ain't going to make a difference)
