Fresh torches on stage

I am looking for suggestions.

When doing a fire eating performance, I need to find a way to have fresh torches available to me in the middle of a performance and they need to be nice and wet. This means have a container with fuel in it somewhere in the performance area, at least that is what I have done so far. However, I am cautious about the safety dillemnas posed by having an open fuel container on stage. I have though about having someone hand me torches, and trying to work that into the performance.

What do you do? Any great suggestions? Innovative ways of keeping torches fresh on stage?

Sometimes i have had to pre-soak fire tools and be able to pick them up in the middle of a performance. White gas would evaporate if left out too long, so I have triple bagged them in plastic bags to prevent that from happening. Then i would have tech people unbag them at the appropriate time and place them on stage for me to pick up and use. They did stay fresh for the burn although plastic bags may not have been the best kind of bag to use.

If it is something you want to have on hand yourself, then a coffee can or somesort with a tight fitting plastic lid (you can tape or tack it down somehow). Cut slits in the top. Allows the torches to go in and out, minimizes fumes and spillage chances (notice I didn't say eliminated).
Make sure the fuel is kept on the edge of your performance space as far as possible from where you are. Then choreograph your way across to them, then back and away.

Just a thought. Hope it helps.
      Kindest Regards, Pele

We have laid out pre soaked tools before...if you take them out with you when you start the performance & place them while beginning your work, they should stay pretty fresh. I've even done it before the piece & been just fine. It also depends a little on fuel type. I would NOT have white gas on naphtha on stage while performing, however have been known to use a decorative bowl filled with Iso for "orgy" kind of things. Depending on the venue, it can even be lit.

It's also quite easy to work in a hand off with someone from your crew. I think that most audiences realize that there are some logistics issues with our art and wouldn't mind seeing a graceful handoff any more than they mind seeing that bulky red extinguisher in the corner. It's just part of the deal.

Thanks so much for the excellent advice! I like the coffee can idea as I also get squirly about having fuel on stage of any kind, although the iso is certainly safer. I've tried pre-setting the torches but for some transfers you really need a nice, wet torch.

      Cheers...

I use a wet(damp) towel, keeps the fuel from evaporating off the torches, and make sure your torches are well soaked, Just fold the towel in half over your torches, then fold the top half back when you need your torches. Fold it back down and you don't have to worry about the fuel that may have soaked into the towel catching. Depending on the torches(we use towels), you'll still have enough fuel still on the torches to do transfers..

Thanks this thread could not have come at a better time! were dealing withthe same issue as well..... had a show this weekend and unfortunatley when I did a quick redip didn't get enough fule off... then drew a line held the wick while a partner lit it well the flame didn't shake off eeccckkk. Our saftey was awsome but it happened so fast i still got a burn. So we too have ben faced with the issue how do you keep wicks fresh enough for transfers eating etc, but not be so rushed re dipping off stage that you make a carless mistake.. like I did. Laying them out they dry too fast, etc.
I will try the foil this weekend.. thanks lama always can count on you.
