Has anyone here spun fire in Greece? We will be going there to do fire shows on the streets of Athens as part of the Olympics entertainment and we don't know what kind of fuel they have available there. Our Greek correspondents haven't been too helpful with this kind of information. We would prefer white gas and lamp oil. Any tips about fuel over there?

Re: Fire spinning in Greece?
Sun, August 15, 2004 - 12:50 AMI have spun in Greece. Go to small mom and pop hardware type stores, I forget what they call them. Ask for Parrafina or Kerosina (spanish, but they usually understand- actually, most understand english as they are all trained in school), I dont know the name in Greek, nor could I actually wright it out here. Its never really pre-packaged so they will pour it into an empty water jug for you. You may want to look into finding a better less leakable container. Or, you could look into any juggling supply stores in Athens who ususlly sell "Fire Water" a good fuel but very expensive, like 10 bucks a gallon, comes in a great heavy duty no leak container though. The greeks use parrafin for lamps in their homes so it should be readily available, a bit off of the beaten path, which in Athens could become an adventure. You could even check for white gas in camping stores, however, less available then the kero or parrafin because Athens is crazy urban and there really isnt any camping. those are your best bet. Good luck in Athens, Have a great time and make sure the cabbie's turn on the meter and dont drive you around in circles. -

Re: Fire spinning in Greece?
Sun, August 15, 2004 - 1:00 AMThe next time I travel to a strange country, I'm going to print out pictures of oil lamps to show people. Even people who speak enough English to deal with tourists often have trouble when you venture this far off the basic tourist conversations.
Gotta love the mom and pop stores! They seem to be in so many countries, and they often carry the strangest assortment of things!

Re: Fire spinning in Greece?
Sun, August 15, 2004 - 12:50 AMI haven't spun fire in Greece, BUT... there's a great guide to fuels in different languages originally intended for campers/backpackers. Says there that you can get Parafinh, aka Kerosine (US) or Parafin (UK). It may not have exactly the same characteristics as what you're used to back home, though, so do a bit of testing first.
Here's the handy link for travellers:

Re: Fire spinning in Greece?
Sun, August 15, 2004 - 1:26 AMThere is a fuel called Klean Heat it is a Kero alternitve I know because this fuel is non explosive it can be shipped I had traveled on an airplane with this fuel before without problems ( I put it into rubbing alcohol bottles) but never out of the USA maybe look into having it shipped over ?
here is a company that sells it via internet and ships it maybe contact them see if it can be shipped to greece
www.msiwix.com/Klean-Heat.htm
shipping weight is 8 LBs so it might be costly but might be well worth having known good fuel for such an event
